Our day trip in Tel-Aviv, 2002

In May 2002, Nondas (A good friend of mine from Greece) told me about some nice Bauhaus buildings in Tel-Aviv. Nondas works in restorations, and he saw some pictures of those buildings. So I thought about doing a day walk tour of my city (Tel-Aviv the "White City"), and see what's it all about. I set up to go with Adi & Alon - which always seem to go along with my silly ideas.

A little bit about Bauhaus

Bauhaus is an art movement which started in post WWI in germany. The main idea was to integrate art, architecture, design, crafts, that sort of thing, and to add an element of engineering to art.
. The city of Tel Aviv is literally an open museum of the International Style in architecture. I think that Tel-Aviv has more Bauhaus buildings than any other city in the world (including Germany...). Here's a nice page about Tel-Aviv Bauhaus buildings, from where I took the old pictures...

So here's a small travelogue - if it may be called like that, of a day's tour in Tel-Aviv. I've also added a couple of pictures of how the buildings looked in the 1930's. Enjoy!
Gan Haiir (The City's Garden) - a nice park above a mall, in the center of the city, right beside the City's hall. Oh, and here's Adi & Alon...
Hel Boulevard. They had a nice "hanging" art show of Tel-Aviv mail boxes photos. Cute!
This is an old building, called "Workers Dormitory" and it probably was. This photo was chosen as one of the winners in The White-City photo competition! cool or what?
Jacob's park, part of the Mann Auditorium Complex (near Habima Theater). It's a wee garden, between two large buildings, but its quite nice.
Hey, what do you know? it's me, still in Jacob's garden.
Cafe Habima - complete with Sandbags (This is the dreaded May-2002 terror attacks period). The sandbags are really more of a gimick...
The old health Clinic in Beilinson street.
And here's how the Clinic looked in the 1930s...
Hashmal street - where the electricity company has some offices and stuff. Hashmal means Electricity in hebrew (see, this page is educational as well!)
Engel's house (or was it someone else?) - The first house in the world (or was it the first in Tel-Aviv?) to be built on pillars, or something like that. Its supposed to be special, anyway. It's basically a big mess right now, hopefully they'll restore it to its former glory someday!
And here's how the building looked in the 1930s...
Tel-Aviv's beach.
A better picture of the beach. Lot's of people!!! Too many, really.
On the way home, in KKL boulevard.
